URL Structure

URL design is the key to SEO success.

The URL structure defines link hierarchy and describes page content. A complex hierarchy is a challenge for web crawlers trying to work their way through the URL structure and extends the time it takes to navigate the structure. Cryptic names reduce the ability for web crawlers to understand the content.

For example:

Avoid: https://dev.lansa.com/blg0045.htm

Good: https://developer.lansa.com/blogs/how-to-design-layouts.htm

Make your URLs meaningful, relevant, accurate and concise. A URL should inform web crawlers what content to expect on the page.

Here are some considerations for designing the URL structure:

Reduce the depth of the hierarchy.

Include SEO keywords in URLs but avoid repeating SEO keywords in URLs.

Prefer static URLs.

Minimise dynamic URLs.

Avoid relative URLs for pages required for SEO.

Use lowercase for the URL.

Prefer hyphens to separate words in a URL.
